NYC

Last weekend we had a pretty fun trip to NYC. It always nice to get away and be inspired by other people and places. I did a fair amount of shooting and keeping in mind a project I will be starting shortly. It's something I've been pre-visualizing for awhile and I'm anxious to put it into motion. If all goes well I'd like to summit it to some magazines. I really need to start putting myself out there more, doesn't hurt does it?

I wanted to include a photo I took in the subway. I shoot at 1600 ISO at 1/20/F 4.5. Turned out pretty cool.

Recent Projects

In the last few months I've really focused on my retouching. I went back and pulled some old files and looked at them a little differently. Sometimes I just need to store the images then look at them again. Here are a few of my newer edits as well as my latest shoots at the bottom. Enjoy!

Side Projects

The last few weeks have been a blur, I really need to start writing dates down in my planner. Since I started working on the weekends in Washington, time just goes too fast. I've been doing a lot of odd photo jobs lately and quickly realized that it's nice to get paid for what you love to do.

My first assignment was working for Autobon out of NY and a great non-profit organization that raises money for endangered species. When Simon first contacted me I had no idea wh
at I was in for. The location was about and hour and a half outside of Pittsburgh, back to middle school I went. Haha ended up the little kids were dressed as Puffins (yes, those little birds that look like little penguins) and every other bird you could think of. It was by no means my type of thing but I worked with great people, met some new faces, and got paid.

This makes me giggle.

Next assignment was first communion photos. The director of Crown Castle needed photos of her daughter Allison's first communion and photos of her son John as well. Coty and I worked on this one together, once we got to her house in Peters Township we scouted out locations around their beautiful house. Coty mostly shot while I posed but I couldn't help but pick up the camera- together we got some amazing shots. We were very happy to get the pleasure of working with Wendy and her family for such an important time her their lives. We knew we wouldn't be able to get all the images to her in time for their family party but we decided to overnight a 10x13 and get it framed for her within 3 days. We stopped by Crown to drop it off to her, she cried when she saw the image. It was a pretty great feeling, she showed every one at Crown and since then we've been contaced by atleast half a dozen more people to do photograph everything from babies, on location family portraits, to weddings. Which led to our next job.

One of my favorites that I took.

One of Coty's favorites that he took.

Village Latte.

Today started off a bit cloudy but after lunch the sun came out just in time for me to take photos in Oakland for another fun school project. Not! Even though it was sunny it was still freezing. Perfect day for a warm village latte from the coffee shop up the street. :) Here are two the the photos I took, just playing around.

The next is the ceiling in the Cathedral of Learning.

Sun.

I didn't mind walking around taking photos for class today. It was a beautiful day in Pittsburgh, finally. =) It's been a busy week getting finals complete, so I ended up putting off my graffiti project until today. Nothing like waiting til the last minute to get things done!

Anyway, MLK is non-profit organization in Pittsburgh who educate and work with teens to create murals. Their goal is to bring some life to the areas they live in by creating jazzy, abstract murals. I had the pleasure of meeting and photographing Edward, Kyle, and Elizabeth a few months ago and they are wonderful people creating art throughout Pittsburgh. I decided to go to Southside to photograph a mural for my illustration in class tonight.

For more information you can visit their website at www.mlkmural.com. Coty Tarr took this images that were featured in Maniac Magazines February issue. If you look closely Kyle is actually drawing my caricature. :)

Specialty

A few weeks ago we were instructed to photograph a piece of paper. The only requirements were it had to be at least one 8.5x11 piece of paper and it had to be shoot in the studio. I immediately had lots of scattered thoughts running through my mind. I knew I wanted to use a model and make it all about the paper. I looked at ever so talented designer, Zoe Bradley, for inspiration. She is known for creating garments, abstract headpieces, and window displays using only specialty paper. Her finished pieces are one of a kind.

Creation-
I knew that the one week we had to complete this project was not going to be enough time to attempt to make a garment. So I searched around for a headpiece and found one that I believed was realistic for me to recreate. Amanda Sccot is a talented hair stylist in the Pittsburgh area, who helped me build a base to attach the paper onto. After problem solving (and super gluing my fingers together) I finally caught on to the way the paper was folding and attaching to the base. The boys laughed and looked at me like I was crazy when I showed them the progress. They were watching the Pens game, chowing down on Cestone's Pizza. I always love to hear what guys things about fashion, they come up with some great analogies. Josh said it looked like a giant marshmallow or a big white loofah that you would use in the shower. It took me about an hour and a half to complete the headpiece once I got rolling.

It was necessary for me to have my model topless (although, I had never done it before) simply because I wanted it to be all about this abstract head piece and clothing was only going to get in the way. I didn't want to have an abundance color in the final piece so I just decided to go with a neon lip, which I later de-saturated a little. Shana Lohn was the make up artist who helped bring my vision alive. The original lighting setup that I had in mind had to be tweeked a little because it ended up being so big it was hard to get light up under it and eliminate the shadows it created. Elizabeth Delgros was the model I found on Model Mayhem. For those who do not know, it is a networking site for photographers, models, make up artists, hair stylist, etc. Liz surpassed my expectations considering she was very limited to movement because we were shooting from the waist up.

Enough rambling. Here was the original inspiration pie
ce and one of my images.

Turns out a couple of days later Japanese hair and make up artist Katsuya Kamo blew everyone away with his elaborate paper headpieces for the Chanel Couture Spring 2009 in Paris.

It's funny, after this whole thing was said and done I learned that you can create anything with a little bit of imagination. All it took was computer paper, tape, and a stapler.

Fresh Air.

I figured creating a blog would be a creative way to share things going on in my life with my friends and family back home, as well as any others who care to read. I don't always have the time to call or check in with everyone so I thought this would be something they could do on their own time.

This might not look so familiar to anyone in the Pittsburgh area but this is a photo taken August 14, 2008 at Black Moshannon State Park in Central PA. My mom has been sick for the last year and this was a beautiful day that I got her out of the house to go aimlessly wonder around with me. It makes me miss the sunshine, warm breeze, and can't forget about that fresh air! =]
